40th Annual Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon

Celebrating four decades of fellowship, food, and fun for Gastonia’s seniors

For 40 years, the Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon has brought together Gastonia’s older adults for a day filled with laughter, music, and heartfelt gratitude. What began as a small gathering has grown into one of the city’s most beloved holiday traditions—thanks to the partnership between Gastonia East Rotary, City of Gastonia Parks & Recreation, New Hope Baptist Church, and American & Efird/Elevate Textiles.

Each November, the Adult Recreation Center on West Franklin Boulevard transforms into a cheerful scene of friendship and thanksgiving. Seniors 50 and older fill the room with smiles as volunteers serve hot plates of turkey and all the fixings, sweet slices of pie, and plenty of sweet tea. The dance floor comes alive with live music from The Good Time Band, proving that joy—and great rhythm—never go out of style.

A Tradition 40 Years Strong

This year’s luncheon marks the 40th anniversary of the event itself and roughly 25 years of involvement by Gastonia East Rotary. “It’s amazing to think how many people have been touched by this tradition,” said Pam Aycock, Events Chair for Gastonia East Rotary. “For many of our seniors, this isn’t just a meal—it’s a reunion. It’s where old friends reconnect, new ones are made, and the spirit of Thanksgiving truly comes to life.”

While records show Rotary’s involvement began in the early 2000s, some longtime members remember helping out even earlier. The luncheon originally included local insurance agents, church groups, and city staff. Over the years, it’s grown into a well-organized community effort that showcases what Gastonia does best—taking care of one another.

Youth and Service Hand in Hand

One of the most inspiring parts of the day is seeing generations working side by side. Members of the Mayor’s Youth Council, all high school students, assist in serving food and greeting guests. Gastonia East Rotarians handle the cooking and plating, while volunteers from New Hope Baptist Church supply the tea, and American & Efird/Elevate Textiles contributes delicious pies, helping ensure every plate—and every heart—is full.

“Watching the teens and seniors interact is heartwarming,” Aycock added. “You see generations connect in such a natural, joyful way. That’s what community service is all about.”

A Day to Be Thankful

The Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon isn’t just about the food—it’s about belonging. For some attendees, it’s one of the few times each year they get to gather with friends in a lively setting. For volunteers, it’s a reminder that giving your time can bring as much joy as receiving a plate of turkey and pie.

The laughter, the band playing old favorites, and the heartfelt thanks from guests make this day one of the highlights of the Rotary year.
